Washington Wine Tasting Tonight!

Posted by

When someone talks about California wine country, you can probably picture the rolling, sun-drenched hills of Napa and Sonoma. Same goes for Oregon and the lush greenery, winding rivers, and delicate morning mists of the Willamette Valley. And of course, the Columbia Valley in Washington, the U.S.'s second largest wine producing state, with its... wait... uh... hmm.

Although there are some vineyards around Seattle's Puget Sound, the heart of Washington wine country lies to the east of the Cascade Mountains, a hot, semi-arid landscape on the banks of the Columbia River, with vivid patches of green where vineyards flourish. This climate is perfect for ripening its big, bold red grapes like Cabernet and Merlot, but the cool nights and high altitudes preserve the liveliness and vibrancy of the whites, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Veteran winemaker Mike Janiuk of Novelty Hill has been making wine in the Columbia Valley since the mid-1980s, and many of his wines have appeared in Wine Spectator's prestigious "Top 100" list. And once again, we've gotten an excellent deal on this delightful lineup, and we're passing the savings on to you! So be sure to stop by tonight for a taste of three delicious, single-vineyard Washington wines, each only $15!

Novely Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2013 (usually $18-$20) This bottle epitomizes the balance struck by the climate of the Columbia Valley: full-flavored notes of tropical fruits and bold citrus from the hot days are lifted by vibrant acidity preserved by cold nights. An excellent, fuller-bodied but lively white to finish out the summer.

Novelty Hill Chardonnay 2013 (usually $19-$23) Bright and lively, characteristic crisp apple and pear abound on the round and slightly creamy palate. Aging in French oak and sur lie provides a full and complex body, with a touch of toast and spice supporting the vibrant fruit. Perfect for chicken or grilled vegetable dishes.

Novelty Hill Merlot 2011 (usually $19-$23) The last 10 vintages of this bottling has been rated 90+ points by Wine Spectator, and this wine does not disappoint. Fresh, aromatic notes of ripe cherry, wild raspberry and cocoa are followed by layers of ripe currant, cherry and spice. Try with burgers, steak, or barbecue!
